Make Your Future Self Feel Real

Most people treat their future self almost like a stranger, a vague, distant person who will somehow deal with whatever gets left for them. That is part of why it is so hard to study tonight for a test that is weeks away, or save something today for a goal that is years off.

Researchers who study this have found something useful: when people picture their future self clearly and specifically, rather than as a vague idea, they tend to make noticeably different choices today, ones that actually favour that future person instead of just what feels easiest right now.

This section is about making your own future self feel less like a stranger, and connecting that vision to real steps you can take from here.

The more real and specific your future self feels to you, not a vague idea of "success," but an actual imagined day, the more likely you are to make choices today that person will genuinely thank you for.

What Students Sometimes Think
Here are some thoughts students have shared about thinking ahead.
All of these are honest responses. The future can feel far away and vague, which makes it hard to act on. What this section explores is how to make it feel real enough to actually plan for.
Your Turn
Meet Your Future Self
Take a few minutes with each question. Be specific, an ordinary day tells you more than a big vague goal does. There are no wrong answers here.
Picture one ordinary day, five years from now, not a highlight, just a normal Tuesday. What does the morning look like? Who is around you? What are you actually spending your time on?
What is something your future self has, a skill, a relationship, an achievement, that took real effort and time to build?
What is one thing you could actually do this week that your future self would genuinely thank you for?
