Every Minute Has a Job

Running out of time in an exam is one of the most common reasons students do not reach their potential. What makes it particularly frustrating is that it is almost entirely preventable. The students who consistently finish papers in good time are not necessarily faster thinkers. They are better planners.

Managing your time in an exam is a skill that works before the paper begins, in the first few minutes of the exam, and throughout every section as you write. Each stage requires a different decision, and each decision has consequences for the marks you earn.

This section covers the strategies that allow you to use every available minute purposefully and to finish every paper having attempted every question you are capable of answering.

"Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else."

What Students Say
Four students share their honest experiences with time management in exams. You do not need to respond. Just read and notice what sounds familiar.
Tariq, Year 8
"I spent almost half the exam on one question I found interesting and got to the end with barely any time left. The questions I left incomplete were ones I actually knew. I learned that knowing the material is not enough if you do not manage the clock."
Gemma, Year 7
"I never made a time plan at the start. I just worked through the questions in order and hoped for the best. When I started writing my target time at the top of each section, I stopped running out of time at the end."
Darius, Year 8
"I used to panic the moment I felt behind. The panic made me rush and that made things worse. My teacher told me to adjust my plan calmly rather than react. That shift in how I thought about it made a real difference."
Imani, Year 7
"I did not realise that a one-mark question and a ten-mark question should not take the same amount of time. Once I started matching my time to the marks, I stopped wasting minutes on questions that were only worth a point."

Well Done
You have explored the key strategies for managing your time in an exam: calculating your time plan before you write, matching time to marks, staying on pace through each section, adjusting calmly when you fall behind, and using any remaining time purposefully. These strategies only become reliable through consistent practice under timed conditions. Apply them in every practice paper you attempt. Head back to Rising Leaders to explore what is next.
