The Reading Brain: How Children Learn to Read

We are starting here for an important reason: to ground ourselves in the why. When we understand what is happening neurologically as children learn to read, we gain clarity, we see how to support them better, and we begin to connect what we teach with how the brain learns.

The Big Idea

Reading Is Not a Natural Process

Reading is a human invention. Unlike speech, which develops naturally through exposure, the brain is not hardwired for it. Reading requires the brain to build brand new neural pathways, coordinating vision, language, sound, and meaning all at once.

That is exactly why reading must be taught intentionally, step by step, in ways that match how the brain actually builds those pathways, rather than left to develop on its own.

There is no single "reading center" in the brain. Skilled reading happens when three different regions fire together smoothly. Tap each card to see what it does.

Before Reading Begins

Why Phonological Awareness Is Essential

Before children can read, they must understand that spoken words are made of sounds, and that those sounds can be broken apart and played with. Tap each skill to see an example.

Recognizing words that share sounds.
Example: cat and hat rhyme. Sun and sand alliterate.
Hearing and counting the beats in a word.
Example: banana claps into three parts, ba-na-na.
Splitting a word into its opening sound and the rest.
Example: cat splits into c and at.
Hearing each individual sound inside a word, the most advanced level.
Example: ship is made of three sounds, sh, i, p.
Understanding Struggle

The Struggling Reader's Brain

When a child struggles with reading, it is usually not about effort. Brain scans show that struggling readers under-activate the decoding regions in the left hemisphere, and instead over-rely on guessing or memorization. It is not about trying harder, it is about brain wiring, and wiring can be built.

Think back to the three key regions. Is this student over-relying on the Occipital-Temporal region by memorizing sight words rather than decoding? Are they under-activating the Parietal-Temporal region that handles decoding? Could they benefit from more Frontal-region work on phonological awareness?
Likely candidates include blending, segmenting, and phoneme manipulation, the foundational skills that make decoding possible.
