Strategies for Equity in the Classroom

If you believe every student deserves an equal chance at success, it's essential to recognize the diversity in your classroom and take intentional measures to promote equity.

"To teach in a manner that respects and cares for the souls of our students is essential if we are to provide the necessary conditions where learning can most deeply and intimately begin."
Bell Hooks
A Question Worth Sitting With

Does every student deserve an equal chance at success? What place does equity play in the success, and the recognition, of diversity in your classroom?

Six Concrete Moves

Strategies for Equity

Tap each strategy to see how to put it into practice.

Challenge your own beliefs when necessary. This work starts with the person leading the room, not the students in it.
Consider how your own teaching strategies can demonstrate equity in action, not just describe it.
Pause, address, discuss, and follow up. Letting a comment slide teaches the room more than confronting it ever will.
Equity isn't treating every student identically, it's making sure every student can actually access the lesson.
Look at who and what is represented in your texts, examples, and images, and who and what is missing.
Create real, regular opportunities for students to speak up about their own experience of the classroom.
"The most valuable resource that all teachers have is each other. Without collaboration our growth is limited to our own perspectives."
Robert John Meehan

What Would You Do?

Four real-sounding classroom moments, each with three ways a teacher might respond. Pick the one you'd actually reach for, then see how all three stack up.

Putting It Into Practice

Of the six strategies, which one is already a strength for you? Which one needs the most work?
Look at your own teaching materials. Who is represented, and who might be missing?
Which colleague could you collaborate with to keep this growth going, rather than doing it alone?
What is one specific, concrete change you'll make in your classroom this term?

This space is just for you. Nothing here is saved or shared, so write freely.

One Last Thing
If you carry just one thing from this toolkit into your classroom this month, what will it be?

Be specific. "Be more inclusive" is a value. "Rotate discussion roles every group project" is a commitment. This space is just for you, nothing here is saved or shared.

Awareness Into Action

D.E.I. work is never finished, it's a practice. Thank you for showing up with honesty and openness across all five sessions, and for the commitment above, the one you'll actually carry forward.
