The Five Components of EQ

The first three are about you. The last two are where connection lives, and they are the ones the people around you actually experience.

The Framework

Goleman's five elements, in a classroom

Tap each component to see what it looks like in your working week.

1
Self-Awareness
Recognising your own emotions, strengths, limits and values, and understanding how your mood affects your teaching.
In the classroom: The teacher who knows that period four is when their patience runs thin is already ahead.
Which Component?

Name the skill in action

Each of these is one of the five at work, or missing. Which one?

The Pair That Shows

Empathy is not sympathy

Sympathy looks at someone from a distance and feels sorry for them. Empathy gets alongside and understands.

Sympathy tends to produce "at least", as in "at least he still has his other subjects". Empathy produces "that sounds really hard, tell me more".

Empathy does not mean agreeing, and it does not mean absorbing. You can fully understand a parent's anger without accepting how it is being delivered to you.

Take It Away
Which of the five comes most naturally to you?
Which one would your class say you are strongest in? Would they say the same as you?
Which one would make the biggest difference this term if you worked on it?
